The two week journey to the blog realm has recently been finalized. This was my first blog, so it was above all very didactic for me. I experienced and observed the difference between a report on an A4 page or word document and a blog page. It was a beneficial experience such that I have found the opportunity to delve into ZigBee technology which could be a possible field for me to incline in the future. I learnt the details of ZigBee Remote Control standard and I got familiarized with the ZigBee Alliance. I gained knowledge on how to evaluate a standard with respect to a set of criteria. I have noticed what could be the qualities of a good standard.
While I was writing the blog, I have mainly utilized the website of ZigBee Alliance with hyperlink http://www.zigbee.org. I found and read the definition of standard, properties of a good standard and also some reasons to form a standard in an alliance from the book, entitled “Standardization in Companies and Markets” and written by Hesser, Felzer and de Vries.
My blog has started with the technical details of ZigBee Remote Control standard (RF4CE) as I had proposed in my very first post. Then I answered the questions in the following section where I also implicitly indicated that the ZigBee standard holds the basic principles of standardization which are voluntary, open, consensus, public, general purpose for society and compatibility: why has ZigBee standard created in ZigBee Alliance and why has the alliance’s standard acquired world-wide approval? Why did not it develop in another organization? After that I enumerated the activities of the alliance during the standardization process. With three different sorts of activities, the alliance has globally addressed to non-alliance members as well as the alliance members. In the last two posts of my blog, I have evaluated the RF4CE standard from various perspectives. Two main points of view for the evaluation are: checking whether the standard has the properties of a good standard defined by Simons and de Vries, and comparison between ZigBee and IR. According to the evaluation section, some general conclusions can be drawn. Firstly, RF4CE standard is a high quality standard since it satisfies all the properties to become a good standard. Secondly, ZigBee technology has significant features and it is much better than IR technology. As a result, ZigBee will actually supplant the IR technology and lead the innovations in remote control field.
